Stockton Street
By Rose Gao
Stockton Street in Chinatown, San Francisco is probably the busiest street of the whole city. Little wonder why. After all, the Chinese settled there and refused to move. Traditions, customs and ways have been established here. Not only that, generations after generations of Chinese children that were born here come to Chinatown at least once in their lives if they are not already living there. Stockton St. is always busy even though there are holidays. And that is because people shop for their daily food in the stores on the Stockton St . A lot of the Chinese new immigrants also work in these shops. Restaurants, Banks, herb shops and even little 99 cents stores offer variety of things that you can buy in Chinatown . Stockton Street is named after the Navy Commodore Richard Stockton who led the troops in capturing California during the Mexican-American War from 1846-1848. Right on the middle of Stockton Street (in Chinatown) is the Central Chinese High School in America . This is where a lot of the American-born Chinese learn their Chinese.
Two famous murals are located in the Stockton Street . One is located on one wall of the Central Chinese High School of America . The Chinese Railroad Workers by Amy Nelder was dedicated to the Chinese that worker their sweat and blood in building the transcontinental railroad, many of whom died. The other mural is the Chinatown Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow by Gernot Wagner depicts how much Chinatown had changed from time. But still, you see the same aces from the ancestors that came from a long time ago to the future generations of Chinese in San Francisco .
