In celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May 2011, you are invited to join a Teen Essay Contest in English
The topic: The Joy of Reading
Deadline: Saturday, May 28, 2011

Judging will be based on originality, grammar, coherence to the topic and more.
The rules:
*Age:12-18
*Text should be written in English only, at least 1,000 words
*One entry per person

*Submission in person or by mail to: Jewel Chen, Chinatown Branch Library, 1135 Powll Street, San Francisco, CA 94108
*Include your name, address, school, grade, phone number and email address
*Essays will be divided into two age groups, middle school (Grade 6-8) and high school (Grade 9-12)
*Prizes for winners of each group: First Place winners – Target gift card ($50). Second Place winners – Best Buy gift card ($25)
*The winner’s essay will be posted on the San Francisco Public Library’s Teen web pages (Chinatown Teen’Zine blog)

EARTH DAY TEEN CHALLENGE!
Just to give you a head start, here’s the TEEN EARTH DAY CHALLENGE!! Raffle Prizes: $50 Amazon gift card, $25 Best Buy gift card, messenger bag of free books!! For ages 13-18 only. You must pick up your prize at the Main Library.
- Go to any local farmer’s market near you.
- Take a digital photo of yourself (or have a friend take it) at one of the stalls.
- Ask the vendor the name of the farm where that stall’s food comes from.
- Send 1. the photo as attachment 2. the farm name and 3. (optional) an idea of how the LIBRARY can celebrate future Earth Days for teens to jenniferlibrarian@gmail.com:.

Beading Arts for Teens & Tweens: Easter Holiday

Let’s make an Easter egg or color balls or a flower etc. You could string colorful beads to make adorable ornaments. Materials provided. Limit to twelve participants. Pre-registration is required. Recycled Paper Beads
Fridays, March 25 & April 1, 3:30 – 5:30 pm

Roll up long paper strips to make rhomboid paper beads. Then you could string the beads to make a bracelet or necklace. Materials provided. For teens & tweens, 8 to 18 years old.

Jewelry-Making with Chelsee Robinson!

In this fun, free, hands-on workshop, local designer and entrepreneur Chelsee Robinson will guide you in creating your own beautiful bracelet, necklace, or earrings. Come for the fun, leave with a skill! Materials provided. Ages 12-18.
