Featured Programs and EventsFrom the food you eat to the plants you grow, from the transportation choices you make to how you celebrate life’s big events, the Library strives to give you the inspiration and information to live green. We’ll be covering important issues like global warming, exploring San Francisco’s unique recycling programs and offering creative programs such as craft projects using recycled materials. Our theme this Spring is food and gardening. You can look forward to programs about neighborhood community gardens, an expose on mercury in our food supply, a discussion with the founder of Cowgirl Creamery and a screening of Deborah Koons Garcia’s film, The Future of Food. For children, special performances at our annual Puppet Festival tie in with our food and gardening theme. See the events listing for further details. Wallace Stegner Environmental CenterThe Wallace Stegner Environmental Center is located on the 5th floor of San Francisco's Main Library. The Center is named for the late Wallace Stegner whose writings display a deep awareness of nature and a commitment to bringing human activities into harmony with the natural environment. The collection includes more than 1,400 books and periodicals on environmental topics ranging from biographies, global warming, conservation, biodiversity and political activism. SFPL's Greening EffortsWe're remodelling all branches of the San Francisco Public Library to make them more eco-friendly. How? Improved insulation, high-effiency lighting, solar paneling, green-certified cleaning products, and recycling absolutely everything we can (up to 70 percent of our waste stream). The Excelsior Branch just completed their renovations. See what they did. |
