Rediscovered at auction in 1984 and authored by Mrs. Abby Fisher, What Mrs. Fisher Knows About Old Southern Cooking, Pickles, Preserves, etc., had been forgotten for a century. It is now believed to be the second cookbook published by an African American and the first by a former slave. Details of Mrs. Fisher’s life had previously been limited to what she had shared in her book’s preface. In this presentation, new research will shine a brighter light over her life history, as well as that of her husband, Alexander, in Mobile, Alabama and in San Francisco.
