Lew Welch Celebration

Lew Welch seemed to disappear in the early seventies.  His poetry, however, was not forgotten.  He was a strong part of the cultural world of Northern California in the  fifties and sixties, an era of artistic and political comradeship and community.  City Lights Press has re-released his volume Ring of Bone. Join us when his close friends Gary Snyder, who was with Lew and Philip Whalen at Reed in the late forties, Joanne Kyger, whose powerful poetic life started in the company of these three, printmaker Tom Killion, who long studied Lew's life and poetry – and some surprise guests - will read from Lew Welch’s work.  This is a tribute to Lew, an introduction to his work, and a celebration of our poetic community over the years.    A book sale by Readers Books follows the event.  Co-sponsored by the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library and City Lights.
