Stories of flight, suffering, freedom, and perseverance inhabit the personal narratives of Eleanor H. Swent's book Asian Refugees in America. She developed an interest in the lives of her Asian immigrant students when she taught English as a Second Language in Oakland's Chinatown during the 1980s.

She began recording their stories 30 years ago, provided updates of their lives in America decades later, and eventually compiled their stories in this book. Come hear compelling stories of how these students conquered their ordeals with their "intelligence, courage, perseverance, religion, family ties, and a strong determination to begin life anew and work hard to achieve the American Dream."*

Eleanor Swent graduated from Wellsley College and earned an M.A. from Denver University. In addition to teaching and her lifelong interest in China, she has worked as a researcher and senior editor at the Regional Oral History Office at UC Berkeley.

*Foreword by Professor Emeritus Judy Yung, co-author of Angel Island: Immigrant Gateway to America.

Co-sponsored by the Asian American Studies Department at San Francisco State University
