CalReads: War Comes Home

According to National Congress of American Indians, Native Americans serve in the military at higher rates than any other group. Currently more than 24,000 active duty military members are American Indian/Alaska Native. However, even if they represent the largest group, Native veterans are the single most underserved group of veterans of the American armed forces. Geographical distances present challenges for many of these veterans to access resources and programs not only for compensation and pensions, but for economic and educational benefits as well. Native veterans have on average a household income of less than $10,000 a year and nearly 60 percent are unemployed. They are less likely to own their own home than other veterans.

Join our panelists to discuss these issues and others, and learn about the impact of military service on their lives and communities.

The San Francisco Public Library and Associated Students Inc. at San Francisco State University present this program in association with Cal Humanities statewide initiative, War Comes Home/CalReads.
