The Story of Sutro Baths

Sutro Baths is one of San Francisco's “lost landmarks.”  Built by Comstock millionaire Adolph Sutro as the world's largest indoor swimming complex, it dazzled visitors with its Victorian opulence when it opened in 1894.  Never profitable, the Baths remained a popular destination for San Franciscans until it burned in 1966. Historian John A. Martini will share the story of this vanished but enduring piece of San Francisco history.

The author will show many rarely-seen photographs from his newest book, Sutro's Glass Palace.  Martini is a fourth-generation San Franciscan and a life-long researcher into the history of the American West.

A book sale and signing will follow the presentation. This event is sponsored by the San Francisco History Center.
