Portraits of LGBTQ Teens in Our New World
Event detail

Photographs by Saul Bromberger and Sandra Hoover of the ‘20th Annual Gay Prom’ last June, at Chabot College, in Hayward, CA.

It was a triumphant and emotional feeling for us to show how much has changed in our culture today when we did these portraits of LGBTQ teens at ‘The 20th Annual Hayward Gay Prom’ on June 7th, 2014, at Chabot College, in Hayward, CA.

We watched couple after same-sex couple come before us to have their portrait done with self-confidence, with no wish to hide who they are, and with love toward each other. During the night teens as young as 13 and 14 years old, came to have their portraits done as individuals, as couples, and as part of a group. We were doing portraits of teens during a vulnerable time in their life, a time when they are asking many questions as they try to figure out who they are, and when the last thing they want is to be judged.

We embraced the opportunity to tell their story, to capture their joy, their freedom, and also their challenges, and to show how far we’ve come as a community.
