Join us for a preview of the film Called Up: The Emmett Ashford Story.  This work in progress tells the story of Major League Baseball’s first African-American umpire who brought a flare and style to the game that had never been seen. Through in depth interview with family, former players, umpires, sportwriters and baseball historians this film tells the story of his life from the minor leagues to the major leagues.

Parts of the film will be shown followed by a discussion with filmmaker Doug Harris.

Co-sponsored by the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library, the Lefty O’Doul Chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), the Dusty Baker SABR Chapter and The Baseball Reliquary.

Related exhibit: A Game of Color: The African-American Experience in Baseball,  Main Library, Skylight Gallery January 13 – March 18, 2018.
