Art Program at the California School for the Blind

The guiding principle of the program is the belief that "every human being is endowed with a creative spirit" (Viktor Lowenfeld, 1957).

Student painting

The painting room has opened and students are making a great variety of artwork. The painting room features a special table with wells that hold cups of paint in place.  A wooden shape beside each cup serves as a tactile guide for locating the paint.  Colors are labeled in print and braille and arranged in a consistent order.  As students familiarize themselves with the layout of the table, they become more independent in selecting and returning materials.

Come experience a variety of witty and surprising forms of creative self-expression by students at the California School for the Blind. Students are encouraged to pursue their interests, make choices, and engage in the creative process as independently as possible. A non-judgmental approach allows students to explore a variety of media and have fun while developing skills.

Ceramics, drawing, painting, and sculpture aid in developing spatial concepts, tactile discernment, and fine motor skills. Enjoy the work made by young people who love doing art and are thrilled when their work is appreciated by others. We are excited to bring you their vibrant artwork that transforms our space and shows the students’ talent and creativity.

Events for adults and children dealing with disabilities, their families, friends and allies.
