In 1940, Polish American immigrant and fledgling radio engineer Moses Asch was introduced to Albert Einstein, who gave Asch the idea that he should record all of the world’s sounds. Soon after he launched Asch Records, which by 1948 became Folkways Records – an eclectic and influential record label whose catalog included pioneering blues, old Americana songs, African American history, world folk, children’s records, political spoken word, early electronic music, environmental sounds, and miscellaneous oddball works.

This class will include a detailed slideshow history of Folkways Records (now Smithsonian Folkways), a demonstration of how to best use our eMusic collection where you can stream thousands of full albums (many unavailable elsewhere online), and finally we will conclude with a virtual LP crate digging session. No registration required.
