The Stuff of Life:

San Francisco Trade Catalogs
Event detail

The California gold rush of the 1850s and the Nevada silver boom that followed propelled San Francisco into its position as the pre-eminent manufacturing and importing center on the West Coast. The San Francisco History Center presents a selection of the catalogs that marketed these products. Whether supplying stamp mills to mining operations, or toys to youngsters, trade catalogs helped bring material goods from factories and warehouses to your door. Before there was Amazon and the Web, there was the literature of merchandising.
