*Beginning Genealogy (Class 2)

Event detail

This four-part series of classes will focus on basic research methods and terminology, gathering records from home and from family members, discussing common (and uncommon) family history records, and looking at the resources available both online and in libraries, repositories, and archives. This series of classes will not only benefit beginning genealogists but usually provides new information for others who are currently doing family research. The four classes will be on the 3rd Tuesday of the month, June to September.

Class 1 (Jun. 18) will cover:
  • Basic terminology
  • Gathering information from records & family members
  • Filling in a basic pedigree chart
  • How to look for vital records and census records
Class 2 (Jul. 16) will cover:
  • Review info from last class and answer questions
  • Review procedures to complete a five generation chart on your computer or by hand
  • Using FamilySearch.org, a free website to start your research
Class 3 (Aug. 20) will cover:

  • Saving your resource documents (on computer or in hard copy files)
  • Finding and using secondary sources: genealogies, county histories, newspapers, etc.
  • Accessing information at state and county archives, historical and genealogical societies, and state, county and city libraries
Class 4 (Sept. 17) will cover:
