*Queer as German Folk

A Transatlantic Commemoration of the Stonewall Riots
Event detail

The 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York offers an opportunity to outline the current state of discourse on queer emancipation. With a spotlight on the dialogue between Germany and the Americas, the exhibition seeks to adjust historical perspectives and question the dominance/hegemony of the traditional cis-male narrative.

This "exhibition on demand," developed by the Schwules Museum Berlin, is being recreated in multiple cities, including Montreal, Toronto, Chicago, New York, Washington, Mexico City, and Guadalajara; and each city’s exhibition is enhanced with local components. A companion booklet will be printed in English, Spanish, French and German.

This exhibition is displayed in two parts, at the Hormel Center at the Main Library and at the Eureka Valley/Harvey Milk branch.

Co-presented by the Goethe-Institut San Francisco and the James C. Hormel LGBTQIA Center, San Francisco Public Library, this exhibition is curated by Dr. Birgit Bosold, Schwules Museum Berlin, with a San Francisco component by local curator Jim Van Buskirk.
