San Francisco Public Library to Offer Downloads of Audiobooks, eBooks, Music and Videos

Digital Bookmobile demonstration of new downloading service available May 8 & 9 at Main Library, Fulton Street side

Beginning May 4, San Francisco Public Library is expanding its collection with the addition of new downloadable audiobooks, eBooks, music and video. Library card holders will be able to check out and download digital media anytime, anywhere from their own computers.

Join us on May 8 and 9 on the Fulton Street side of the Main Library, to see a demonstration of the new download service in a special Digital Bookmobile, sign up for Library cards, and check out all the electronic resources that San Francisco Public Library has to offer.

“This is a great addition to our existing online resources and gives San Francisco Public Library the ability to offer our patrons a wide collection of popular downloadable books, movies and music that can be enjoyed on a variety of formats including MP3, which is compatible with most Apple portable players,” said City Librarian Luis Herrera.

The new download service will give patrons the opportunity to browse a growing collection of best-selling and classic titles from their own computers. To check out, users will need a valid library card, a personal computer and an Internet connection. Once downloaded, digital titles can be enjoyed on the computer or transferred to a supported device, like an MP3 player. Many audio titles can also be burned to CD to enjoy in the car. At the end of the lending period, titles will automatically expire and are returned to the collection. There are never any late fees or damaged items.

Patrons will need to install free software, like the OverDrive Media Console for audio, music, and video titles, for use on a Windows operating system or Mac. To read eBook titles, patrons will need to download the reader software from Adobe and Mobipocket eBooks.

The free and easy to use service is provided by San Francisco Public Library and powered by OverDrive, Inc. To check out and download audiobooks, eBooks, music and videos visit beginning May 4. To see all of the Library’s electronic resources, go to
