Photographs and text that detail the little known migration of free Blacks from the Bay Area to the west coast of Canada in 1858. Direct descendants of those San Francisco area Blacks still reside on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia where a Black community continues to thrive.

Inspired by the Black migration from San Francisco in 1858, Salt Spring (a rural farming and artist enclave of about 10,000) has seen a recent influx of Blacks from the U.S., Africa, Europe, the South Pacific, the West Indies and other regions of Canada.
