Susie Taylor Memorial Lecture

5/19/2019
1:00 - 3:00

Main Library

Skylight Gallery - 6th Floor

100 Larkin St.

Calligrapher Carl Rohrs gives the inaugural lecture for the first annual Susie Taylor Memorial Lecture, a celebration of the lettering arts in honor of the beloved curator of the Harrison Collection of Calligraphy & Lettering. This first lecture in the annual series is fittingly a career-long retrospective of the superb work of Susie Taylor herself. Besides her enormous contributions to the world of calligraphy and lettering in the Bay Area and beyond, Susie was one of the most classic yet identifiable scribes anywhere in the world.

Susie Taylor (May 19, 1941-December 5, 2016) served as the Library's Curator of the Richard Harrison Collection of Calligraphy & Lettering for more than 35 years, where she was instrumental in building one of the most important collections of contemporary calligraphy in the world, and for introducing the work of international calligraphers to new generations of practitioners and students of lettering arts.

Carl Rohrs is a lettering artist, graphic designer and typographer, as well as the editor of Alphabet, the Journal of the Friends of Calligraphy. Recently retired from his own sign painting business in Santa Cruz, Carl still teaches graphic design and typography at Cabrillo College, and calligraphy workshops throughout the U.S. and overseas. His calligraphy is represented in several collections, including the Library's Harrison Collection of Calligraphy & Lettering, in the Book Arts & Special Collections Center.

Presented by the Book Arts & Special Collections Center. In the South Salon, Skylight Gallery. For more information please contact us at bookarts@sfpl.org / 415.557.4560.
