The Library launches new Work It series focused on jobs, business and finance

San Francisco, CA — With the unemployment rate at 12.5 percent in San Francisco, the Public Library is stepping up to help patrons find pathways to economic recovery. This fall, San Francisco Public Library launches Work It an ongoing series of virtual programs focused on supporting job and career seekers, personal finance needs and small business resources.

“Since the shutdown we have seen a tremendous uptick in participation in virtual programs and utilization of SFPL’s free eLearning platforms designed to help job-seekers acquire new skills or support them in finding new career opportunities,” says City Librarian Michael Lambert. “Clearly the need is great for this kind of service, and San Francisco Public Library is well positioned to help. Our new Work It series will offer a wide range of programming to assist patrons in navigating these challenging times. We want the public to know that we have their backs and that we are here to help them weather this storm.”

Highlights of the Work It series include Financial Planning Series, a virtual speaker series covering topics such as health insurance, taxes and investing.  Jobs and Careers programs also feature Resume Writing Essentials, How to Get a California State Job and Hope Levy’s Age as an Asset program, which explores ways for older adults to use their life experiences to land the perfect job. In partnership with California Employment Development, the Library will offer CalJOBS for Beginners in Spanish and Cantonese.

Learn how SF Reserve First Impressions program matches talented, skilled older adults and people with disabilities with paid part-time and project-based work at local nonprofits and other community-based organizations in San Francisco.

Additionally, SFPL’s robust Jobs and Careers portal offers a multitude of options for job seekers, such as live resume, interview and career coaching with JobNow and EDD. Check out the Libray’s Business and Personal Finance Resources, including COVID local resources. SFPL continues to partner with Smart Money Coaching for expanded one-on-one counsel on budgeting basics. Job seekers are also encouraged to check out the Library’s free technology workshop series, Tech Time.

Money: How to Budget, Save and Invest, Saturday, September 5, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

This workshop is designed to help you establish a money management system that works for your personal needs. The goal of the workshop is to help you learn how to become debt free and financially independent over time by managing your cash flow beginning with money psychology basics and more. How to Get Grants with Foundation Directory Online, Wednesday, September 16, 10 a.m. – noon

Looking for grants for your nonprofit? Come learn how to use Candid’s Foundation Directory Online (FDO) – now available online via San Francisco Public Library. 90% of foundations don't have websites! FDO is the most comprehensive prospect research tool for fundraisers, with nearly 200,000 grantmaker profiles. Starting promptly at 10 am, this virtual class will provide a 40-minute overview of how to look for grants using FDO Essential, as well as how to use Candid’s other services. After this formal instruction, you can request a short (up to 15 minutes) one-on-one session with a Candid representative – via Zoom –to help with your specific questions.
