SF’s beloved annual celebration of children and books features musicians, storytelling, crafts

San Francisco, CA – The San Francisco Public Library invites families to the Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros Virtual Celebration on Sunday, April 25 from 12-1 p.m. Bring the bookjoy right to your living room. Celebrate literacy and nature right along with us.

Kids and families, sing and dance along with The Lucky Band. Read along with Park Rangers. Listen to the musical talents of Keenan Webster as he plays beautiful West African instruments and Fauna Solomon bringing the steelpan, a musical instrument creates by children in Trinidad and Tobago. Tune in for entertaining stories, musical performances and craft ideas. Plus, come along with us for the virtual ride and visit special outdoor spaces in San Francisco. Join us on the Library’s YouTube Channel and at diasf.org to celebrate our first virtual Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros.

“Every year, families across San Francisco look forward to this wonderful community festival, and we are so thrilled to be able to offer it as a virtual celebration. Favorite library performers and community members will light up living rooms with music and bookjoy!” says Maricela Leon-Barrera, Early Learning Coordinator.

Día de los Niños is a popular Mexican and Latin American holiday, recognizing the importance and influence of children in society.  In 1996, the first Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros was started by author Pat Mora in New Mexico with Support from REFORMA, The National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking. Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros brought together the idea of honoring children and promoting their literacy by celebrating their language, culture and books.  Since then, the celebration has grown nationally and has been observed by the San Francisco Public Library since 1999.

New this year: pick up a companion Día guide featuring special activities, including an easy how-to on starting your own at-home garden, creating a leaf crayon rubbing and a poetry prompt. Available during open hours at any SFPL To Go or SFPL To Go-Go location starting April 19.
