Josiah Luis Alderete, curator and host of Speaking Axolotl, brings together a celebration of Latinx poetry featuring Alan Chazaro, Florencia Milito and Susana Praver-Perez.
Florencia Milito is a bilingual poet, writer and translator whose work has appeared or is forthcoming in ZYZZYVA, Indiana Review, Catamaran, Digging through the Fat, Latinas: Struggles & Protests in 21st Century USA, Zócalo Public Square, among others. A Hedgebrook and Community of Writers alumna, CantoMundo fellow and former San Francisco Grotto fellow, her writing has been influenced by her early experience fleeing Argentina’s 1976 coup, subsequent childhood in Venezuela and immigration to the United States at the age of nine. In 2020, Milito read at the 8th Winter Warmer Poetry Festival in Cork, Ireland. Her bilingual collection Ituzaingó: Exiles and Reveries / exilios y ensueños was published in 2021 by Nomadic Press.
Alan Chazaro is the author of This Is Not a Frank Ocean Cover Album (Black Lawrence Press, 2019), Piñata Theory (Black Lawrence Press, 2020) and Notes from the Eastern Span of the Bay Bridge (Ghost City Press, 2021). He is a graduate of June Jordan’s Poetry for the People program at UC Berkeley and a former Lawrence Ferlinghetti Fellow at the University of San Francisco. Susana Praver-Pérez is a Pushcart-nominated poet and a winner of the San Francisco Foundation/Nomadic Press Literary Prize for Poetry (2021). Born and raised in New York, Praver-Pérez currently resides in Oakland, California where she works as a Physician Assistant at La Clínica de la Raza. Their work has appeared in numerous literary journals and anthologies. Her first full-length book of poetry, Hurricanes, Love Affairs and Other Disasters, is now available from Nomadic Press.
Josiah Luis Alderete is a full blooded Pocho, spanglish speaking poeta who first learned how to write poesía in the kitchen of his Mama’s Mexican restaurant. He was one of the founding member of Bay Area outspoken word group “The Molotov Mouths” and is the curator and host of the long running monthly Chicano/Latinx reading series “Speaking Axolotl”. This year he had the honor of being one of the recipients of the 2021 San Francisco Foundation/Nomadic Press Literary Award and also had his first book of poems Baby Axolotls & Old Pochos published by Black Freighter Press.
