SUMMARY:Workshop: The Importance of Diversity in ASL Interpreters
DESCRIPTION:
The US-Based Deaf Action Foundation presents a workshop to orient BIPOC youth and adults about the differences between American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting programs, and why they are important.

The workshop will provide participants information about where to learn ASL, both as a college course and from Deaf people in Deaf venues, in order to become fluent in the language as well as the culture of Deaf people.

Learning ASL is beneficial in many ways: people of color can use ASL to further their careers, by allowing them to communicate with others and create a more welcoming environment for people who are Deaf or hard of hearing, or even by allowing ASL to be their career. It is important to note that there are very few Black ASL interpreters, and Deaf Black people deserve to have interpreters who are aware of their specific cultural needs.

This workshop will occur in two sessions: from 10am until noon, the workshop is aimed at teens and young adults. From 1pm–3pm, the workshop will focus on adults.

Visit the US-Based Deaf Action Foundation website to learn more about their mission.
