Roberto Lovato and Ingrid Rojas Contreras discuss books, writing and Lovato’s new book, Unforgetting: A Memoir of Family, which recounts in this anguished memoir his 2015 trip to El Salvador to investigate the country’s horrific gang wars. Unforgetting is an urgent, no-holds-barred tale of gang life, guerrilla warfare, intergenerational trauma and interconnected violence between the United States and El Salvador. Roberto Lovato’s memoir excavates family history and reveals the intimate stories beneath headlines about gang violence and mass Central American migration, one of the most important, yet least-understood humanitarian crises of our time—and one in which the perspectives of Central Americans in the United States have been silenced and forgotten.

Roberto Lovato is a writer and journalist working out of the San Francisco Writer's Grotto. Lovato is a recipient of a crisis reporting grant from the Pulitzer Center. His journalistic work spans the entire hemisphere and centers on issues of immigration, the drug war, national security and climate change. His work also explores the intimate link between the online and offline worlds, between storytelling and social movements. Lovato is a co-founder of Dignidad Literaria is a grassroots campaign for greater Latinx inclusion in the United States publishing industry that has grabbed the attention of activists and publishing executives alike.

Ingrid Rojas Contreras was born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia. Her first novel Fruit of the Drunken Tree was the silver medal winner in First Fiction from the California Book Awards, a New York Times editor's choice and an SFPL On the Same Page selection. Her essays and short stories have appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Buzzfeed, Nylon and Guernica, among others. She is working on a family memoir about her grandfather, a curandero from Colombia who it was said had the power to move clouds.
