After a woman steps off the balcony of her apartment, plunging to her death, her pawnbroker husband begins a search to find out why. Robert Bresson's first color film, based on the Dostoevsky short story A Gentle Creature (about 40 pages long), explores themes of jealousy, isolation and marital unhappiness, as told in flashbacks and with the director's highly ascetic style.
