Alfonso, a 60 or 70 year old peasant, returns home after a 17 year absence to care for his sick adult son and face the family he left behind. This non-melodramatic story of catastrophic hardship, set in rural Colombia during sugarcane harvest when crop burning fills the air with a blue-gray ash (reminiscent of contemporary wildfire haze), touches upon issues of labor and health rights with stark, eerie images.
