Jefferson will discuss how African Americans spent leisure time during the Jim Crow era and how efforts to join segregated recreational spaces contributed to the freedom rights struggle.

Sponsored in partnership with the California Historical Society, this discussion with public historian Alison Rose Jefferson examines how African Americans in the period from 1910 to 1960 created recreational spaces in southern California and in the process formed community. Living the California Dream: African American Leisure Sites during the Jim Crow Era presents local stories of African Americans who fought for equal access to pools, parks and public spaces.

Following a brief presentation, Jefferson will be in conversation with Shawna Sherman, librarian for the African American Center. A Q & A, reception and book signing will follow.
