Manage Finances Worry-Free with San Francisco Public Library


SAN FRANCISCO — This April, in keeping with Financial Capability Month, San Francisco Public Library (SFPL) offers virtual and in-person programs all month-long on topics including financial advice, debt management, education repayments, avoiding scams and more to help build the financial literacy skills needed for success. 

“The level of financial savviness needed to tackle the diverse range of today’s economic challenges can be high,” said Personal Finance Librarian Jonathan Steimnitz. “Every individual’s situation is unique, which is why SFPL is offering educational programs for all backgrounds and experience levels, along with personalized help from certified financial experts. Financial Capability Month, together with our ever-available wealth of free resources, are a part of SFPL’s greater dedication to financial empowerment for the City's residents.” 

Financial Capability Month kicks off on April 1 with a virtual introduction to smart investing and an in-person workshop on debunking tax misconceptions at North Beach Branch. It culminates on April 29 with a virtual presentation on how to save for education and a workshop on building financial strength at the Main Library.  

Other programs in Financial Capability Month's jam-packed lineup include retirement planning with Heather C. Liston, CFP®, EA and principal at Clarity Financial; navigating property taxes with San Francisco Assessor-Recorder Joaquin Torres; a student loan and repayment workshop with Kue Lee, Director of Targeted Outreach at the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation and Student Loan Servicing Ombudsperson Celina Damian, and more. After Financial Capability Month, continue to build financial literacy through pro bono expert insights from Certified Financial Planners™ with Advisers Give Back and one-on-one financial counseling from the San Francisco Financial Empowerment Center. Advisers Give Back’s services are available to people who are single with no dependents, not earning more than $100,000/year and have less than $250,000 in total savings or who are single with dependents or married (with or without dependents), not earning more than $150,000/year and have less than $250,000 in total savings. 

San Francisco Financial Empowerment Center offers free, confidential, basic financial guidance for anyone living, working or receiving services in San Francisco, regardless of citizenship status. Coaches are fluent in Spanish and Mandarin, with additional translation services as requested.
