Community Creativity Takes Center Stage at 65th Annual Potrero Hill Artists’ Exhibition
SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco Public Library (SFPL) proudly presents the 65th Annual Potrero Hill Artists’ Exhibition, a beloved neighborhood tradition celebrating the creativity and diversity of local artists. On view from May 9 through August 29, 2026 at the Potrero Branch Library, this milestone exhibition continues a legacy that has brought the community together for more than six decades.
Featuring artwork by artists who live, learn, work or worship in Potrero Hill and Dogpatch, the exhibition highlights a vibrant range of styles and perspectives rooted in the neighborhood. From painting and photography to mixed media and beyond, the show reflects the creative spirit of one of San Francisco’s most dynamic communities. First launched in 1955 by local artist Charles Farr and fellow community members, the exhibition began as a grassroots effort to support the library and prevent its closure. Today, the Potrero Hill Artists’ Exhibition stands as San Francisco's longest-running annual art show and a testament to the enduring connection between art, community and public space.
“The art exhibit and reception are very important to me,” said Sofia Carmi, Potrero Hill resident and a long-time participating artist. “An artist friend, Henri Marie Rose, told me of the history of the library exhibition. He suggested I exhibit—and I have been exhibiting since 2008.”
This year's exhibition features more than 50 pieces from local artists, reflecting the great range of creativity throughout the neighborhood. The exhibition launches with a festive opening reception on Saturday, May 9 from 6–9 p.m., featuring live music, light refreshments, hands-on art activities for children and the opportunity to meet participating artists. This free, family-friendly event invites the public to engage directly with the artists and celebrate the neighborhood’s creative talent. The Library will also be hosting its annual Open House the same day.
“The Potrero Hill Artists’ Exhibition really testifies to the creativity that thrives within our neighborhoods,” said Michael Ulrich, the Library’s acting branch manager. “For 65 years, this exhibition has brought people together, celebrating diverse local voices, fostering connection and reinforcing the Library’s role as a cultural hub.”
The exhibition is free and open to the public during regular library hours.
