Maxine Rose Schur is an award-winning children’s book author and travel essayist. Her critically-acclaimed books for young people include picture books as well as middle-grade and YA historical novels. Schur’s travel essays have appeared in numerous publications including the San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles Times, San Diego Union-Tribune, Insight Guide to Hispaniola, Salon.com and on NPR. She has twice won the Lowell Thomas Award given by the Society of American Travel Writers for excellence in adventure travel journalism. Maxine’s just-published and newly-revised travel memoir, Places in Time, was named Best Travel Book of the Year by the North American Travel Journalists Association and Best Travel Narrative by the Society of American Travel Writers. As the book reviewer for the San Francisco Chronicle wrote, “Maxine writes with so much humor, suspense and wisdom. This is what travel memoirs should be, and so seldom are.”

Sarita Sarvate was born and raised in India and came to the United States to attend graduate school at the University of California, Berkeley. For twenty-five years, she wrote the Last Word column for India Currents, a monthly magazine catering to the Indian diaspora worldwide and read by many non-Indians. Her topics have ranged from India’s nuclear tests to female infanticide to dowries and other evil aspects of Hindu patriarchy. Her op-eds have been published in the Oakland Tribune, the Los Angeles Times, the San Jose Mercury News and many other media outlets. After winning the best commentary award from New America Media, an alternative syndicate, her essays were published on Salon.com, Counterculture, the Baltimore Sun, and numerous nationwide publications. She has aired commentaries on National Public Radio and its San Francisco affiliate, KQED FM. For three consecutive years, she has won awards for her columns from the San Francisco Press Club. Currently, she is preparing to publish her memoir, Midnight’s Daughter, about the life she has lived in defiance of the taboos of her native culture.
