Hands-on creative opportunity to learn first hand from LGBTQIA+ comics creators as part of the inaugural Pride in Panels: SF Queer Comics Festival!

Workshop schedule

1 p.m – 2:20 p.m. Mini-Comic Madness!
Queer comics have a profound history of DIY production. Punk zines and mini-comics are made with photocopy machines and staplers and enable artists to get their work into the world without gatekeepers and censors. This workshop run by Sarah Maloney will show you the basics of making your own mini-comic and empower you in the same way as generations of underground artists have been before you!

2:30 p.m – 4:50 p.m. The Reading Nook

Need a break from the festivities? After the workshop, the Hormel Center will be a quiet space for folks to chill and read our expansive collection of comics, zines, and books. Workshop attendees can also finish their mini-comics here.

Sarah Maloney (they/she) is a queer visual artist, storyteller and educator. They have self published over 10 comics and zines. Their work has appeared in The Stranger, The Believer, The Rumpus, The SF Examiner and other rad comic platforms. They have an MFA in Comics from CCA and are the shop cat at Silver Sprocket.

Exercise your power of imagination with programs that encourage hands-on projects for adults. For craft programs, all materials are provided, unless noted.

Gather, share knowledge and celebrate our unique identities at the queerest library ever.

For more resources, the James C. Hormel LGBTQIA Center is the gateway to the Library’s broader collections documenting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex and asexual history and culture, with a special emphasis on the San Francisco Bay Area.
