Journalist and commentator Emil Guillermo will discuss Filipino veterans and other issues of Filipino American history with Professor Daniel Phil Gonzales of the Asian American Studies Department at San Francisco State University.

An audience Q&A will follow the discussion.

Emil Guillermo is an award-winning journalist and commentator, notable for being the first Filipino American to host a national news show, NPR's "All Things Considered." For nearly 30 years, he has written a weekly column on race, culture, and politics from a Filipino Asian American perspective, featured in ethnic media and on the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund website. His collection, Amok: Essays from an Asian American Perspective, won an American Book Award. Emil hosts “Emil Amok’s Takeout” on YouTube and “The PETA Podcast.” He also performs his “Amok Monologues” at theater festivals across North America.

Prof. Daniel Phil GonzalesProf. Emeritus Daniel Phil Gonzales was a participant in the student-led Strike of 1968-69 at San Francisco State College and co-founder of and co-lecturer in the first School of Ethnic Studies in the US, the Asian American Studies Department, and the Filipino American Studies program in 1969. After undergraduate studies in International Relations and Political Science, he earned the Juris Doctorate at Hastings College of Law, University of California. Prof. Gonzales taught courses dealing with Asian Americans and the law, US government and political process, US/Philippine relations and Filipino American history from 1970 to 2022.  He continues to teach, research, write, and conduct oral history interviews in these areas.
