Muni’s L-Taraval line began service to the Sunset District in April 1919, and was the first streetcar line to connect residents of the burgeoning Parkside neighborhood along Taraval between 19th and 33rd Avenues to Downtown San Francisco. Join Nicole Meldahl, Executive Director of Western Neighborhoods Project, for an illustrated talk that celebrates the line’s long history and highlights some of the historic destinations–from the Parkside Theatre to the San Francisco Zoo–along its route over the years!
Western Neighborhoods Project (WNP), founded in 1999, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that preserves, interprets, and shares the diverse history and culture of San Francisco’s west side. In support of this work, WNP launched the OpenSFHistory archive in 2014 to digitize and make accessible online thousands of historic San Francisco images that reach citywide.
