6:00 - 7:30
In this workshop led by local artist and educator, Edie Trautwein, participants are invited to explore the rich imagery, diversity and significance of living irezumi tattoo practices through interpretive zine making. There will be two different types of zines to make; one zine will highlight traditional motifs found in irezumi tattoos drawn from Japanese folklore, and another zine will focus on the techniques of tattooing, drawing on the interviews with tattoo artists in the exhibition, and the relationship between ink, memory and the body.
Participants will be provided with zine making supplies, including pre-printed zine outlines, pens, crayons and glue sticks to illustrate and collage, and printed examples of irezumi tattoos from the exhibition, which will credit the respective artists.
The goal of the workshop is to encourage visitors to connect the storytelling aspect of irezumi tattoos with zines, using the medium as a way to interpret and explore cross-cultural practice through identity and experience.
