Presented during Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month and in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States, Resonance invites audiences to rediscover Asian American history as an essential part of the American story.
Drawing on archival research from the Austin History Center, this special one-evening program blends experimental video, live dance performance, and artist dialogue to bring history to life. The work is inspired by the remarkable lives of pioneering Asian Texans Joe Lung and his daughter Inez Lung Lee, and introduces a documentary film currently in development and expected to be completed in late 2026.
Through art, storytelling, and conversation, Resonance explores how historical archives and personal memories can be transformed into contemporary artistic expression—connecting past and present across generations and continents.
The event will be presented with English and Cantonese bilingual presentation/subtitles.
A partnership between Asian American Art & Culture Initiative (AAACI), Artability Art & Collection, and the Chinese Center of San Francisco Public Library.
Speakers & Performers:
Xuhua Zhan, curator of Roots Unveiled and co-creator of Resonance; director for documentary My Great Grandfather Built a Diaolou, curator of Chinese diaspora and cross-cultural projects.
Lok Yiu, artist/filmmaker and collaborator with Xuhua Zhan on Resonance and related documentary work. Lok Yiu is also co-compoase the music for Resonance.
June Xu, Chinese American artist and founder of Asian American Art & Culture Initiative (AAACI); June is also the producer of documentary My Great Grandfather Built a Diaolou.
Long Yunna, founding member of Guangdong Contempary Dancing Company, renowned contemporary dancer and choreographer, who created and performs the original dance for Resonance.
《回響：從檔案到藝術》是一場融合錄像藝術、現場舞蹈、口述歷史與藝術對談的跨界公共藝術活動，透過藝術重新喚起被歷史檔案保存的生命故事，讓塵封的記憶在當代產生新的回響。
故事的核心人物周秋龍（Joe Lung）十歲時隨兄長自中國開平遠渡重洋來到美國，先抵達加州，後定居德州奧斯汀，成為當地最早的華人居民之一。他曾參與鐵路建設，後在市中心經營深受歡迎的餐廳，不僅凝聚華人社群，也透過私人借貸默默幫助難以取得銀行貸款的少數族裔在異鄉立足。雖然他曾返鄉探親，卻未曾親眼見過由他匯款興建的家鄉碉樓「龍回樓」；戰亂年代，這座碉樓成為村民重要的避難所。
他的女兒周紉蘭（Inez Lung Lee）於1919年成為首位獲准就讀德州大學奧斯汀分校的華人女性。完成學業後，她選擇回到中國，投身女子教育長達三十餘年。抗日戰爭期間，她與師生共同堅守校園度過艱難歲月；後因護照因素返回美國時，她仍積極為中國抗戰採購物資與藥品並募款支援。
在呈現實驗影像作品《回響》的同時，本計畫也訪談並記錄了周秋龍家族第三代與第五代分佈於中美兩地的後人，以及曾受周紉蘭教育與影響的學生與後輩。透過這些口述歷史與藝術轉化，跨越世代與地域的故事再次被聽見，並在今天產生新的回響。
