Psychiatrist and author Dr. Jessi Gold discusses How Do You Feel?: One Doctor’s Search for Humanity in Medicine, a moving exploration of burnout, caregiving, and compassion. Drawing from her own experiences and the stories of her health care worker patients, Dr. Gold examines the emotional costs of caring for others and the ways medicine—and all of us—can better honor mental health, connection, and our own humanity.
Jessi Gold, MD, MS is a psychiatrist, associate professor, and Chief Wellness Officer of the University of Tennessee System. She works clinically with health care workers, trainees, and young adults, and is a nationally recognized mental health advocate. Dr. Gold regularly writes for outlets such as The New York Times and The Atlantic, bringing empathy and clarity to conversations about burnout, wellness, and mental health. She did her residency training nearby at Stanford, and was chief resident there.
