Hamburger Eyes is a magazine that spotlights gritty, black-and-white photography without comment, but its lineage as a photography periodical can be traced through the collections of the Magazines and Newspapers Center here at SFPL. Find common touchstones of photographic practice and presentation by inspecting a curated selection on display on the 5th floor of the Main Library—including selections from magazine titles Lenswork, Black & White, Aperture, Contact Sheet and Camerawork, all drawn from materials available for browsing in the Bound Magazine Browsing Collection.

This display connects to the exhibition The Continuing Story of Life on Earth: 25 Years of Hamburger Eyes, on view in the Jewett Gallery from April 23–Sept. 24, 2026.
