The Mix Group Visit Request Form

Note: This form is for schools and organizations interested in visiting The Mix at San Francisco Public Library's Main location at 100 Larkin. To schedule a visit at a branch library, please contact the branch you would like to visit

The Mix accepts group visit requests for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday between 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. To request a Friday visit, please email themix@sfpl.org with your request details. All class visits are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis, and are subject to library staff availability.

Please keep in mind that visits to The Mix should be scheduled at least 2 weeks in advance. A staff member will reach out to you within 5 business days.

Teachers/Educators can also include visits to go deeper with research that matters at the Magazines and Newspapers Center (5th floor) and/or the San Francisco History Center (6th floor) before or after visiting The Mix. More info at the end of the request form.

Does Your Group Need Library Cards?
If members of your group do not have library cards, we can arrange to create them ahead of time. You can obtain library card applications here. Please allow two days for processing.
Please check any activities that you are interested in participating in during your visit. We will try to accommodate as many as possible based on staffing and group size.
Keep in mind that the Mix has many self-led activities like button making, puzzles, board games, public computers, media creation stations, art space and gaming (PS5, Switch, VR).

A class visit to the Magazines and Newspapers Center and San Francisco History Center offers students a unique opportunity to engage with current and historical events through primary sources from local to global.

  • Grades 7-8: Students practice sequencing, source evaluation, and basic cause-and-effect analysis.
  • Grades 9-12: Students develop higher-order thinking skills such as contextualization, evaluating perspective, and interpreting historical significance.

San Francisco History Center (Main Library, 6th floor)

San Francisco History Center - 6th Floor | San Francisco Public Library

The San Francisco History Center, located on the 6th floor of the Main Library, serves as the official archives for the City and County of San Francisco. It also administers the archives of the LGBTQIA Center.

Please select the San Francisco History Center activity you are interested in for your group:
A guided tour and overview of the Center’s collections and services.
Explore archival materials such as maps, photographs, political speeches, oral histories, documents, activist flyers, and ephemera. Activities are designed to build research skills, evidence analysis, and understanding of point of view. Sessions can be customized by theme (e.g., Black history, Queer history).
Activities may include creating timelines from archival resources or connecting local events (e.g., Gold Rush immigration, 1906 earthquake, WWII shipbuilding) to broader state, national, and global contexts. Students may also analyze maps and planning documents to assess how geography and infrastructure shaped San Francisco’s cultural development and neighborhoods.
