Mythic Heroes of SOMA Pilipinas

Soma Pilipinas

Filipinos have lived continuously in the South of Market area since the early 1900’s, but current socio-economic forces threaten today’s community.

Presented by Kularts, Isugid Pinoy! (“Tell it, Pilipino” in the Bisayan dialect) is a graphic arts storytelling project that celebrates San Francisco’s SoMa Pilipinas Filipino Cultural Heritage District. Visual artists Don Aguillo and Raf Salazar created comic narratives based on the real-life s/heroes at Arkipelago Books, Bindlestiff Studio, West Bay Pilipino Multi-Service Center, Veterans Equity Center, and the South of Market Community Action Network (SOMCAN).

Isugid Pinoy! is curated by Don Aguillo and Raf Salazar. The exhibition features their artwork honoring the contributions and achievements of the Filipino community and the vibrancy of that culture.

Opening reception

Saturday, October 5, 2019, 4 p.m.

The reception includes a ritual performance of sagayan, an indigenous dance of Maguindanao and Maranao people in the Philippines, led by Aguillo and Salazar.

The exhibition is free and open to the public during library hours.

Sponsored by the Filipino American Center.

This is a Reading, Writing & Poetry program from SFPL. We love reading/sharing/creating words.
