Celebrate Black Music Appreciation Month with The Motherlode: 100+ Women Who Made Hip-Hop, is a comprehensive, illustrated history of women rappers who have helped shape the genre and eschewed gender norms in the process. Written by Clover Hope and Illustrated by Rachelle Baker.
The Motherlode highlights more than 100 women who have shaped the power, scope and reach of rap music, including pioneers like Roxanne Shanté, game-changers like Lauryn Hill and Missy Elliott, and current reigning queens like Nicki Minaj, Cardi B and Lizzo—as well as everyone who came before, after and in between.
Clover Hope is a Brooklyn-based writer and editor. She’s written for a range of publications over a 16-year career: Vibe, Essence, XXL, Elle, Billboard, Wired, The New York Times, Vogue, W, GQ, Nylon and Village Voice, among others. Hope has held staff writing and editing positions at Billboard, XXL, Vibe and Jezebel. She’s currently a Contributing Editor at Pitchfork.com and an adjunct professor at New York University.
Hope’s first book, The Motherlode: 100+ Women Who Made Hip-Hop, a comprehensive, illustrated history of women rappers, is available in bookstores via Abrams Books.
