Explore, edit, photograph, and fact-check as we celebrate Wikipedia’s birthday with a full day of hands-on activities for all ages. Learn how the world’s largest free encyclopedia is created—and help make it better.
Schedule of Events
All day — Wikipedia-themed crafts, screenprinting (bring your own teeshirt or bag!), photobooth and games. There will be puzzles, coloring sheets, Wikipedia games - and Wikipedians to talk with.
10:30–11:15 am — How to Edit Wikipedia or Vikidia, for Children (workshop for families - please bring a laptop if possible!). In this workshop, participants will learn about the core principles of Wikipedia and how to use the editing interface in an age appropriate way. The facilitator will also how children can start contributing. Recommended for families with children ages 8-13.
11:15 am–12:15 pm — A Day in the Life of a Wikipedian. In this panel, a group of Wikipedians will discuss their work and and answer question. Come learn about how Wikipedia gets written! All ages.
12:15–1:00 pm — Break
1:00–1:45 pm — Photography Workshop. In this workshop, participants will learn about how to take images for Wikipedia. They will take images of the library and the close neighborhood and add them to Wikimedia Commons. Please bring a camera if you have one, or you can use a smartphone.
1:45–2:30 pm — Wikipedia History Trivia & Birthday Cake. What do you know about Wikipedia? Test your knowledge and win prizes.
2:30–4:30 pm — Learn to Edit Wikipedia: an Editathon. Learn how to add references, improve, or create new articles about San Francisco and the Bay Area. Please bring your own laptop.
