Adaptations
2026 is a landmark year for book-to-film adaptations. Pop culture vultures seeking original source material to prepare for an upcoming release or satisfy their hunger for more after watching the adaptation. These materials are ready to explore now for free with your San Franciso Public Library card! From audiobooks to translations, the Library has diverse, accessible copies of the stories that inspired highly anticipated and loved feature films.
Get ready for upcoming releases like Christopher Nolan’s movie adaptation of The Odyssey, the next installment in the Hunger Games series, Sunrise on the Reaping, and author-turned-director Jenny Han’s 2027 feature film that will conclude The Summer I Turned Pretty. Discover novels behind critically acclaimed adaptations out now, such as the sheep detective mystery Three Bags Full by Leonie Swann. And those who were swept up by the Wuthering Heights craze earlier this year can get ahead of the upcoming Pride and Prejudice adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic, directed by Dolly Alderton.
Romantasy
Pair vacation with fiction’s hottest genre, romantasy, for the ultimate escape. Those curious about getting in on the trend can check out A Court of Thorn and Roses, the novel that kicks off Sarah J. Maas’s blockbuster series, now available on Libby. Additionally, Rebecca Yarros’s Fourth Wing, the first in her bestselling Empyrean series, can be found in print. While romantasy is a relatively new genre, Yarros and Maas’s titles have been among the top 10 most popular books at SFPL over the past few years for both teens and adult readers. Yarros’s latest Empyrean novel, Onyx Storm, sold 2.7 million copies in its first week and was the fastest-selling novel in 20 years. For those hungry for fresh picks, the Library recommends Tusk Love by New York Times bestselling author Thea Guanzon and That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Human by Kimberly Lemming.
Graphics Novels and Comics
Satisfying and speedy reads, graphic novels and comics are a perfect fit for a day at the park or by the pool. Absolute Wonder Woman, by Eisner Award-winning writer Kelly Thompson, is currently available on Hoopla. Mari Yamazaki’s Thermae Romae Novae: The Complete Omnibus, currently one of the top five most popular graphic novels at SFPL and a popular Netflix series adaptation, is available to check out in print. Alison Bechdel, whose graphic memoir Fun Home popularized the genre two decades ago, is back with a new comic novel, Spent, which is ranked as the top graphic novel this month at SFPL and is available on Libby. And for manga fans, SFPL offers popular series such as The Apothecary Diaries by Natsu Hyūga.
Literary Reads
Summer vacation is also a great opportunity to make up time with a juicy, critically-acclaimed novel. With two-time Pulitzer winner Colson Whitehead’s last installment in his Harlem Trilogy, Cool Machine, releasing later this July, it’s time to check out the first title in the series, Harlem Shuffle, a thrilling family saga/crime novel. Fans of dark academia should spend time with R. F. Kuang’s ambitious fantasy novel Katabasis. And for a lighter, escapist read, The Dallergut Dream Store by Korean author Miye Lee serves up a world where people and animals go to buy dreams.
