SAN FRANCISCO, August 5, 2026 — San Francisco Public Library (SFPL), in partnership with the California Genealogical Society (CGS), presents the Genealogy and Family History Symposium. The free two-day conference, held on August 12 and 13 at the Main Library, is designed for individuals interested in uncovering their family history. It will feature 19 programs with esteemed speakers from SFPL and local genealogy organizations, who will cover a diverse range of topics to enhance your research skills. 

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about valuable resources available at the library, both physical and electronic, that can aid in their genealogical research. The symposium will also provide insights on how to effectively search for specific ancestors, including those from African American, Portuguese, Chinese, Filipino American, Russian American and other backgrounds. 

"Whether you are just starting with genealogy or looking to sharpen your skills, this conference is a great opportunity for those looking to deepen their understanding of family history research,” says Brian Weaver, 3rd Floor Manager of the Main Library. “We want participants to leave with practical knowledge and tools to assist them in their journey to learn their family’s story.” 

This year’s program offers an expanded lineup with various discussion groups led by experts in specific areas of genealogy, including Russian American, Chinese and Japanese. Participants in these discussion groups can ask questions about their heritage and learn about additional resources to help with their family history search. 

During the two-day conference, SFPL welcomes representatives from the California Genealogical Society, Oakland Family Search Center, Sutro Library, Ancestry.com and Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern CA to table and share resources in the Lower Level of the Main Library. Attendees are welcome to drop in for one session or several throughout the Symposium.
