Project Read tutors have access to free instructional materials including workbooks on spelling, phonics, grammar, and more.

Recommended Online Trainings  

  • Adult New Reader Collection  In this webinar from August 2025, members of the Adult New Reader project team introduce the books and discuss how they can be used in tutoring sessions. Project Read offers free copies of many of the titles, and they can also be accessed online for free here. 
  • California Library Literacy Services (CLLS) Tutor Training  Get a firm grounding in tutoring basics with the three parts of this series. Take a 12-hour basic adult literacy tutor training, get a one-hour intensive preview of basic reading, and view a video series with ideas for ESL tutor training. 

  • Tutor Training – Reading Playlist  42 videos from CLLS covering decoding, phonemic awareness, signal words, mind maps, skimming, making predictions and other strategies.
  • Tutor Training – Writing Playlist  34 videos from CLLS covering the writing process, pre-writing, editing and more.

Tutor Roundtables

Tutor Roundtable meetings provide Project Read tutors the opportunity to share experiences, ideas, and successes with other volunteer tutors and our staff. We discuss strategies to meet the needs of adult learners and address any concerns tutors may have.
