The San Francisco Public Library celebrates the initiation of its first SF Youth Poet Laureates program with its new reading series, San Francisco Living Poets Society, curated by SF Poet Laureate Genny Lim in collaboration with Youth Speaks and 826 Valencia. The readings launch in January and will introduce our city’s newly selected Youth Poet Laureate cohort members to the public, along with a who’s who of local poets and an open mic, at participating SF Branch Libraries. This reading will feature Youth Poet Katelyn Wong and local poet Clara Hsu in an intergenerational poetry reading, followed by an open mic where poets are welcome to share their work. Reservations recommended (by phone or in person only): (415) 355- 2888.

About the poets |

Katelyn Wong was born and raised in the Inner Richmond of San Francisco, growing up eating dim sum on Clement Street and watching her dad vigorously play ping pong at the Richmond Rec Center. She is passionate about advocating for women of color and sharing her first-generation experiences through filmmaking and poetry. One day, she hopes to pursue higher education as a first-generation student. If she’s not writing or eating noodle soup—even on hot days—she’s probably watching Cantonese dramas with her dad.

Clara Hsu is a Chinese-American poet born in Hong Kong. She is a mother, piano teacher, traveler, actor, translator, playwright, and executive director of Clarion Performing Arts Center. Clara leads a free weekly Cantonese Conversation Class at the Clarion. Her bilingual music video Gai Mou Sou Rap and her Cantonese play DragonBeard have sparked interest and uplifted the spirit of Cantonese-Americans. Clara's next Cantonese play, A Lantern Riddle, will premiere in August 2026.

Naia Chien is a sixteen-year-old Chinese American poet and writer from San Francisco. She writes on topics of mental health, culture, heritage, and the raw human connection to ourselves and the world around us. With her writing she hopes to shed light on unspoken struggles. She strives to inspire self-reflection and empathy through poetry, an art that carries us through darkness.

Naia Chien
