Learn about women gliders’ achievements and the history of gliding in the San Francisco Bay Area as presented by aviation historian Gary Fogel and aviation researcher Madison Cicchitto. Fogel and Cicchitto focus a spotlight on pioneering aviatrix Maxine Dunlap (circa late 1920s–early 1930s) who was the first licensed woman glider pilot in the United States. Dunlap was also one of the founders of the California Glider Club in San Francisco and served as the club president. A Q & A session follows the presentation.
Gary Fogel is an adjunct professor of aerospace engineering at San Diego State University, an aviation historian who writes extensively on the history of early aviation focusing on gliding and soaring and is the CEO of Natural Selection, Inc.. Co-presenter Madison Cicchitto is a San Diego State University student and aviation researcher. Fogel and Cicchitto recently presented their research on Dunlap as a conference paper for the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautic SciTech Forum.
