We will discuss Ghanaian-American author Yaa Gyasi's debut historical novel, Homegoing. Each chapter follows a different descendant of an Asante woman named Maame, starting with her two daughters who are separated by circumstance. One daughter Effia marries James Collins, the British governor in charge of Cape Coast Castle while her sister Esi is held captive in the dungeons below. Each chapter follow their descendants over multiple generations.
