6:00 - 7:30
An intimate, behind-the-scenes look at the vibrant cultural scene of 1970s and '80s San Francisco through the lens of the Steve Abbott Papers. Steve Abbott -- a poet, journalist, essayist, novelist, activist, and single gay father -- captured the heart of San Francisco's literary and queer communities during a pivotal era, from the early gay civil rights movement to the rise of the AIDS crisis. This special show-and-tell event is led by our knowledgeable archivist, who will guide you through highlights from the collection and the stories behind them.
This program is in partnership with the theatrical releases of the film Fairyland, based on the memoir of the same name written by Steve Abbott's daughter Alysia Abbott. Attendees of this program will receive two complimentary tickets to a screening hosted by the Hormel LGBTQIA Center at the Roxie Theater on October 22 at 12:30 p.m. For more information about the screening, email hormel@sfpl.org with subject line "Fairyland."
