Come to our all-ages "Geology & Rockhounds 101" as the SF Gem & Mineral Society returns with a program on local geology, minerals & gems, and field trips. At the SFGMS building in the Sunset District, you can learn to cut & polish stones and make jewelry. The event is a lead-in to their annual show August 4-5 at the Hall of Flowers in Golden Gate Park.

"Rockbrarian" Robert will show examples of rocks – quartz, jade, gems, metallic ores and fossils found in this part of California – and talks about the "rockhound" scene: collecting, gem & mineral shows, "What can I do with my rocks?", "What are healing crystals?", and more. Bring a "mystery rock" to be identified, a puzzling polished stone to learn about, or a treasure to show. See the specialist books, magazines, maps and websites where you can learn even more. Come for both learning & fun!

It all ties in with SF Public Library's "Summer Stride" reading/activities program (sfpl.org/summerstride), promoting reading, science learning, and visits to parks and Nature.

This is a Green Stacks event sponsored by the San Francisco Department of the Environment.

This is a Making & Creative Arts program from SFPL. Create with us- from clothes to robots to so much more.
