In The Watermelon Woman, director Cheryl Dunye uses mockumentary storytelling to reveal Cheryl, a young Black lesbian working a day job in a video store while trying to make a film about a Black actress from the 1930s known for playing the stereotypical “mammy” roles. This seminal work was the first narrative feature film to be released by an out Black lesbian filmmaker. 90 mins., 1996.
