As we prepare to celebrate Juneteenth—the national holiday commemorating the end to slavery in the United States—we talk with author Kris Manjapra about his new book Black Ghost of Empire, which compares emancipation as it happened around the world and how even with emancipation injustices and anti-black discrimination have persisted.

Kris Manjapra is a professor of history at Tufts University, and a recipient of the 2015 Emerging Scholar Award by Diverse magazine. He is the author of the forthcoming book, Black Ghost of Empire: The Long Death of Slavery and the Failure of Emancipation, which goes on-sale on April 19th.
